5ONE WORD.......INCREDIBLE!!
By KtoDog
Connected to an Alpine MRX-F30 Amplifier, Rear Channels with 4 Volt pre-outs from a Kenwood KDC-X496 Deck.

Speaker reviews are very subjective as vehicle interiors are very harsh listening environments and few people actually take the time to provide the acoustic suspension a speaker requires to perform to specification. 6x9 inch speakers are typically rear deck speakers, made for free-air applications with the vehicle trunk serving as the enclosure. This varies with vehicles and can range from very small tightly sealed and dampened (Honda Civic comes to mind) to very large, poorly sealed and not dampened (most American cars). Having said that, my 87 4Runner has neither a trunk nor a tightly sealed installation option for 6x9 inch speakers. As a matter of fact, the rear speakers I replaced were 4 inch amplified drivers firing from brackets in an infinite baffle with zero pressure differential from driver cone to rear basket (horrible idea at best but it was 1987 after all...Breakfast Club....Sixteen Candles, Molly Ringwold hot??? What were we thinking??). I knew I had to go with a custom installation if I wanted decent sound. My options were 8 inch subs, running with LPF crossed-over at 80 Hz (12 Db Octave) or a high-end set of 6x9's. The 6x9's would provide some rear presence in the 180-400 Hz range even when using a LPF whereby the 8 inch subs would provide a good 80-200 Hz response but pretty limited and inefficient given installation in a small sealed enclosure. Having experience with Alpine's R series speakers in the past (being blown away by high quality) and looking at the specs, efficiency and cone material not to mention the neodynaium magnet motor, I opted for the 6x9's. All I can say is WOW!!!!! They exceeded my expectations and then some!!! Given that their average impedance is 3.3 Ohms, you get more out of your amp but maintain the lower THD of a higher impedance load. Actually comes out to about 4 ohms average with 14 gauge speaker wire where most 6x9 speakers are in the 5-18 Ohm average range with speaker wire given their poorly wound and low quality voice coils and formers (not alot of R&D spent on 6x9's anymore as most companies have abandoned this size in the high-end segment). Though, much like Suzuki with the GSXR 750 (a class abandoned by most bike manufacturers), Alpine not only built a great speaker in a much neglected class but put tremendous effort into it, yielding superior results.

I ramble, back to the review..........

I built custom .75 inch dense particle board enclosures into the vehicle structure in the rear side panels of my 87 4Runner. The total volume of the enclosure is approx 1.0 cubic foot, each side
sealed up tightly with spray-in foam and reinforced. My Alpine MRX-F30 amp birthsheet states 110 watts per channel at 2 ohms so I am at around 80 watts per channel to these Alpines (amp is advertised at only 50 watts per channel......Cha-Ching!! I love underrating....it's old school and cheers to Apline for bringing it back). They sound incredible and move a tremendous amount of air. The silk dome tweeter sounds elegant and warm, no harshness at all even when driven at extremely high volume levels. I have to say, the X series Alpine Amps are also engineering marvels and match nicely to these drivers.

Give these speakers some clean power and good acoustic suspension and they will reward you!! Even compressed music sources (Pandora, Sirius XM both averaging 100K bitrate) sound great.

Please never judge a speaker when driven from a low current source such as a deck. Do your research about current sources and you will understand that a 45 watt deck and a 45 watt standalone amp are not the same. Discreet high current sources with MOSFET switching power supplies provide a true wattage at a low THD across the audible band (18Hz to about 17.5 Khz, 20Khz for you young folks with good timpanic membranes!) whereas the deck produces 45 watts at 1 Khz and 2 watts at 80Hz while damaging your speakers with high THD. Ever see a birthsheet with audio spectral response and wattage for a deck amp? You won't because it looks like a sharp bellcurve! Deck power, my friends blows speakers...not clean high power at any volume.

Anyway, I ramble again. THESE SPEAKERS ARE ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE AND AN UNBELIEVABLE BARGAIN! THESE SPEAKERS, THIS STORE AND AMAZON ROCK!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ALPINE AND AMAZON!!

Thanks for reading. Remember, give them a good home and feed them with copius clean power! Results.........audiophile-grade sound in a rolling tin can! What's more fun than that?! Molly Ringwold and John Hughes movies??????Shudder!

5Alpine All Day
By R. L. Tucker II
Always been an Alpine fan ( Alpine, Kenwood, Memphis Audio, etc.) I'm an old school dude. And these new ALpine type R's hit hard. I had them put in my car (dodge Caliber) powered by the Alpine PDX 5-channel amp. With that amp these things aint no joke. Exactly as it states in the description and worth th emoney.

p.s. i'm about to patch in the Type R 12 to complete my setup. These 6x9's are gonna keep my highs and mids clear, and the 12 is gonna be plenty of base to keep it balanced since my car is a hatchback the acoustics are great. (no tweeters)

p.p.s covers dont fit in my car so my 6x9's are naked but tucked behind the door panels so you don't see them anyway. It did come with them though.(Covers, adapters, speakers{2 per box}, and manual)
